A romantic, a dreamer, someone with a big imagination. This is the kind of person the Knight of Cups represents. They are sensitive and full of emotion and are lead by their hearts. These three Knights on their steeds are all facing right, looking forward, full of ideas, but do they have what it takes to take a step forward?
The Knight of Cups in the Supernova Tarot is one of my favourites, he’s just so fancy and full of charm. He’s not shy, he can express his emotions confidently and calmly. He gracefully rides his fun fair sea horse through an ocean of emotions, ready to bear his heart. He is on a quest, whether that is to find his soulmate or take a step forward towards manifesting his ideas and dreams. He’s not afraid to say, “I like you” or “I can do that job”. He raises his cup as he sits relaxed, he appears to have everything under his control and it all look incredibly romantic!
The Celtic Tarot shows the Knight of Cups riding a dragon, standing before a flowing stream. This is not a huge body of water like the sea, often pictured on the Queen and King cards, for this Knight is young and still lacking in emotional and spiritual maturity. He’s a dreamer with a big imagination, romantic and sometimes jealous. Him and his dragon gaze at the water, as if not knowing how to progress across it. Can he step out of his fantasy world of big dreams and find the maturity and practicality to manifest his desires?
Our last Knight, from the more traditional Rose Tarot is seated upon a white horse. He looks elegant and in control and has more movement in his image than the other two Knights. He may be based on a Grail Knight, Galahad, the son of Lancelot and Elaine. A hero type, guided by his heart, maybe bringing a message, an invitation or proposition. He knows what he wants and has his emotions under control.
The Cups are all about emotions and the Knights, still young, are full of dreams and ideas. Can they progress from their fantasy worlds and reach the maturity of the Queen and King? Are they bold enough to let their hearts lead the way? They certainly have an appealing elegance and grace to them as they manoeuvre their ways forward.
