The Hierophant represents tradition, conformity, rituals, rules and ceremony. This card is about following the rules, because there are situations when that is the best solution for us, despite a desire not to conform to society’s order. The Hierophant can also symbolise a teacher or mentor, someone who is guiding you. This card could also suggest that you should seek guidance to help you find a more authentic path through life.
The Hierophant from the Tarot de Carlotydes by Carlota Santos is pictured as the Pope, his figure robed in a deep rich red. He represents tradition, but also dogmatism. Even his chair matches his robes, they blend together as one, making him appear fixed, steady, unmoving - perhaps in his thoughts, ideas and beliefs. He takes part in a ritual. It looks like tea time, something that the Queen would have done- she herself also a symbol of tradition, rules and order. Just like the tea set is laid out and the way the Hierophant sticks his little finger out whilst holding his tea cup- everything appears as it should be. However, sitting opposite him in an open backed chair, a rabbit wraps his paws around his mug. He looks inquisitive and curious and also appears to challenge what his companion has to say. Perhaps this rabbit is seeking guidance from this fatherly figure, perhaps he wants to open his mind to new ideas, whether those are traditional or non conformist. Sometimes it is best to follow the rules, even the rabbit’s companion, who appears to disengage from the structured scene, carries a bag in the same colour as the Popes robes.
Our next number 5 card is titled “The teacher”. Created by Joanna Powel Colbert in her Gaian Tarot, she has chosen an elderly male figure, who sits in a relaxed and open position, his back against a tree, his face smiling. He is surrounded by different herbs and hold dandelions in his hands. He appears wise and willing to impart his wisdom, if you are open minded and willing to listen. He wears prayer beads around his neck, a symbol of communication, and the tree he leans against is a symbol of the tree of life. This guiding figure has gained a lot of experience and wisdom and he is open to sharing it with you. Maybe he is the teacher and mentor you seek?
In the modern Tarot deck Lumina Tarot by Lauren Aletta, we see another wiseman, a shaman, a guiding authority and leader of rituals. He holds a skull above his head, as if he has lifted it away from his face, his eyes, and he can see differently and open his mind. The skull radiates a rainbow of colours, this teacher is all about spirituality. He guides you to seek a deeper insight, maybe to disengage with old beliefs and be open minded to new ideas. He calls you to follow your heart, maybe in this case to walk away from the mainstream and dogmatism.
All of these Hierophants are wise, authoritative and offer guidance. They are willing to teach you, to show you a path. Whether traditional or something new, they can teach you the rules, give you the guidelines, open the way for you to make good choices along your journey.
